The Start of Observing Flies

When being assigned to observe something, I had to think hard of what interests me enough to the point where I would go outside and watch something living for a couple of months. I came across the thought of flies. When someone thinks of flies, it's usually the words "pesky insects" that pop up to mind. But I believe that humans are judging flies based off of what they look like and what other people say about flies. Sure, flies are born from maggots, and they buzz around too much while trying to get some food from a human, but what people don't know is what flies exactly do on their own time.
I had set off into my backyard and spotted a Blowfly sitting precariously in the curve a bright green leaf. It stood incredibly still, eyes so red that it reminded of me the color of rustic blood with how dark the red shown. The color of its body was a fine sheen of green and turquoise, illuminating and reflecting off the suns light. The fly's wings were almost translucent. It had turned it's body towards my direction, eyes watching me, or so I think it was. It rubbed it's two front legs together, like it was cleansing itself from all the dirt it had been in, brushing it's legs together in a quick swiping motion, making itself look like it was up to no good.
Flies lives only last for about four weeks or more if they are lucky enough. When figuring out a flies lifespan, I had wondered "what is the importance of a fly?". Flies have such a short life, and have such little time to experience some pleasures in the world. People look at flies as useless or worthless but I don't think they are. Flies dirty themselves, cleaning up waste that is on the earth like decaying organic matter, or at least speed up the process. Without flies, humans would have to live with waste longer than they are used to, and it can become hectic with all the waste laying around and not decaying fast enough so flies are useful even when it seems they are not.

This is a picture I took on my phone in my backyard. The Blowfly is sitting on a leaf in a strawberry patch, caught in the action of rubbing it's feet together.

  1. You actually make flies seem beautiful (great photo). I've decided flies are one of the main creatures that are devouring my fallen apples. I see the usefulness but I wish they'd leave my horses alone. :)

  2. This is beautifully written! The details you put in to describe the fly exactly is wonderful. I never knew the flys life span was so short, I guess you do learn something new everyday;) I also never knew there significance, now I can look at them differently as in there not just annoying there helpful too. I wonder how people can tell its gender?

  3. This is a well written essay, where I think art is colliding with knowledge. I love the contrast in the photo but how did you get such an excellent photo without it flying away?

  4. After reading your post flies seem a lot more interesting. And funny to say as I was reading your post a pesky fly happened to be flying around bothering the heck out of me! I can't believe what a short life span flies have, it almost makes me feel bad for them. I also find it very interesting that you mentioned the fly rubbing its legs together because I have seen that many times but never knew what they were doing. I heard they regurgitate there food to eat or something, yuck! I don't know if that's true but you should look into it and let me know. Also I am very curious to why flies always seem to run into you purposely. Most insects hide and go away but flies come after you abundantly! Could it have to do with their sight? Well I will look forward to finding answers to some of my questions. Good job!

  6. A question i have is do you think they try make the best out of their short time here? To be honest I think you made me pro-flies. I think you make a valid point in saying that we judge them by the way they look and really don't try to understand what they do. I really love that your exploring them .

  7. This was a really good post. I feel like we judge flies like we judge books; by the cover! I used to think flies were so gross like they fly around dog poop and then get on your food but the way you gave flies a purpose in life made me realize that they are there for a reason and I thank you for that. Keep it up! :)

  8. Ever since you told me the flies lifespan I've been thinking, humans lifespan is considered normal for us, so the flies lifespan is normal for them. What if flies think we're like gods because we live so much longer then they do. What if something that lives for longer periods of time than us, sees us as flies. It's a trippy concept to think about, how we think we own the world but what if we're small in someone or something else's eyes.

  9. Your blog is well put together. I honestly hate flies but you proved a point that they are somewhat important to this world. I never thought about flies like that. Also I love how you described the fly I never gave much thought as to how they actually look like.

  10. I honestly find flies fascinating too! Like how do they create that buzzing sound that annoys the crap out of everybody. And have you noticed that they have hairs on their back and legs just like a spider. Pretty cool looking insects if you ask me.

  11. OMG! The way that you describe the fly is just gorgeous. You describe the fly as having beauty and not just being an annoying insect that bugs people. I love that you see the beauty in things and not just the ugly.
